Being diabetic limits the different foods you can eat. One of the types of foods that will cause your blood sugar to soar is Chinese. However, if you are smart about it, and look over the menu well, you can quit having to eat something different when your family orders Chinese food to be delivered. Here are a few tips and tricks to get you through the meal without ending up with sugar through the roof.

Things to Avoid

Unfortunately, there are a number of things you should avoid when calling for Chinese food delivery. Make sure anything you order does not have a sweet sauce – yes, that means sweet and sour anything is out. Check to see if the meats or vegetables in the dish is breaded and/or fried. If it is, don't order it. Another thing you shouldn't eat is the noodles, as they are high in carbohydrates.

Things to Eat in Moderation

Rice is pretty much a staple to the Chinese diet. However, restaurants tend to put way to much in an order. You can ask for a smaller portion of the rice, or just limit yourself. A serving for a diabetic should be ½ a cup. It is also a good idea to have any sauces (remember, no sweet sauces) on the side so you can control the portion. This includes garlic sauce, brown sauce, fish sauce, and soy sauce. Keep in mind, being diabetic puts you at greater risk for heart disease, so keep the sodium to a minimum. Ask for low sodium soy sauce.

Substitutions

Luckily, most restaurants understand the need for substitutions. If a recipe is normally served with noodles, ask for bean sprouts instead. Ask for brown rice instead of white too. You can also ask if the cook can steam, bake, or broil the meats instead of frying them. Finally, ask for more vegetables in the recipe to increase your fiber intake.

There are plenty of things on a Chinese menu that are low in carbs and sugars. If you are not sure what is in a dish, ask. If it has things you shouldn't be eating, ask if there are substitutes for those things. It is also a good idea to eat some steamed vegetables before some of the other dishes to fill you a bit so you don't want to eat the things you shouldn't. Luckily, fortune cookies are not exceedingly high in carbohydrates, so if you watch what you eat for the rest of the meal, you can still have your cookie at the end.
